Why Uncertain Times May Be the Right Time to Explore Franchise Ownership
The Advice Everyone Gives Is Usually Wrong
Most people say the same thing whenever the economy gets shaky: wait it out. Keep your steady job and think about starting a business only when things seem more stable.
But the truth is, the news is almost never calm and the future is rarely certain. People who wait for perfect conditions often end up waiting for years. In fact, history shows that some of the strongest businesses started when things looked toughest.
The 2026 Numbers Tell a Different Story

In July 2026, the U.S. Census Bureau counted 578,926 business applications, up 8.1 percent from the month before. That means over half a million people decided to start something new in just one month.
People are making these choices even as jobs feel less secure. In the first half of 2026, U.S. employers announced 443,604 job cuts, the second-highest total since 2020. When regular jobs seem shaky, more people want control over their own income.
History backs this up. WhatsApp, Uber, Venmo, Square, and Slack all started in 2009, right after the financial crisis. Groupon and Credit Karma began in 2008. Tough times do not stop good businesses from starting—they just make sure only the strong ones last.
The Better Question Is Not When, but How
People focus a lot on timing, but that is not what separates success from failure. How you start matters much more than when you start.
When you start a business from scratch, you have to build everything yourself—the brand, systems, vendor relationships, marketing, hiring, pricing, and even deal with mistakes you did not expect. That is a lot to handle in any year, and even harder when times are uncertain. Statistics on new business startups show that survival rates drop during recession years.
Franchising is different. You own a business model that has already been built, tested, and improved—often in many locations and through different economic times. The systems, training, supply chain, technology, and marketing support are all in place. Customers already know the brand. You still have to work hard, but you are not starting from scratch.
That is the main difference. If you start from scratch, you learn every lesson the hard way. With franchising, you benefit from lessons someone else has already learned.
Where Franchising Is Growing in 2026
The International Franchise Association projects that franchising will reach approximately 845,000 establishments in 2026, a 1.5 percent increase over the prior year. Franchise businesses are expected to employ nearly 8.9 million people, adding more than 150,000 jobs, and to produce $921.4 billion in economic output.
Growth is not the same everywhere, which is important for anyone deciding where to focus. The IFA says child services and commercial and residential services are the fastest-growing franchise types in 2026, both growing at 3.2 percent. Preventive healthcare is now the third-largest franchise industry since the pandemic.
The underlying consumer demand backs this up. The American Pet Products Association reported $158 billion in U.S. pet industry spending in 2025 and projects roughly $165 billion in 2026. The U.S. child care market was valued at $68.83 billion in 2025 and is forecast to grow at a compound annual rate of 6.02 percent through 2033.
These are businesses based on needs that families cannot put off. Kids still need care, homes still need repairs, pets still need attention, and health is always important. That reliability is what makes these areas worth considering, even when times are uncertain .
Loyal, high-performing employees are cut in restructurings. Companies get acquired. Whole job categories get automated away.
Owning a business does not get rid of risk—it just changes where the risk comes from. Instead of relying on decisions made by strangers in a boardroom, owners rely on their own work, their own market, and their own choices. For many people, that is exactly why they want to make the switch.
Waiting comes with a hidden cost. Every year you put off the decision is a year you are not building something you could grow, sell, or pass on to your family.
How a Career Ownership Coach® Fits In
Most people get stuck at the same point. They want a change, but do not know how to compare hundreds of franchise options, look at investment levels, or tell a good opportunity from one that just looks good.
This is where a Career Ownership Coach® can help. Their job is not to sell you a brand, but to help you think clearly and make decisions based on facts, not just feelings. Discovery comes first, clarifying income goals, lifestyle needs, risk tolerance and what the person actually wants their days to look like. Education follows, introducing franchise categories most people never encounter because they only know the businesses they drive past. Then comes due diligence, where a coach helps candidates ask sharper questions, read the disclosure documents carefully, and talk with existing franchisees about what ownership really involves.
Franchise Match connects people who want to own a business with Career Ownership Coach® professionals and franchise opportunities that fit their goals. Franchise Match focuses on giving you step-by-step guidance through the decision process.
What Success Actually Looks Like
Success in franchise ownership usually does not mean building a huge company. More often, it means having control over your schedule, earning money based on your own effort, owning something you can sell, or running a business with your family.
It can be as simple as going to your child’s school event without asking for time off. It can mean feeling secure because you are not relying on one employer. It can also mean building wealth by owning a business, instead of just hoping your retirement account grows fast enough.
The First Step Is a Conversation
Exploring franchise ownership: You do not need a big upfront investment to explore franchise ownership. What you need is information. Talking with a Career Ownership Coach® is free, and there is no pressure to move forward unless it is right for you.
What shows up again and again is this: people who regret their decisions usually either rushed in without guidance or spent years wondering what if and never found out. People who are satisfied with their outcome almost always took the time to explore properly before deciding.
Uncertain times do not have to be a reason to wait. If you are ready to move forward with a proven model and real support, this could be the best time to find an opportunity.
